As the world moves forward trying to pin down the widespread COVID-19 virus through the use of high profile vaccines, it’s important we take a moment to acknowledge the everlasting role of natural products in maintaining herd immunity and a personal disease prevention strategy.
“One potential regulator of the host stress and antiviral inflammatory responses is cannabidiol (CBD), a member of the cannabinoid class of natural products (11). CBD is produced by Cannabis sativa (Cannabaceae; marijuana/hemp)."
Marsha Rich Rosner
As we understand it, the natural world is a highly complex and integrated system of evolving life forms which provide the human scientific community all of the chemistry needed for dissecting and reconstructing compounds into modern medicines. Since the passing of the 2018 farm bill (and with medical cannabis legalization inching closer), research has begun to unfold on over 96 new cannabinoid compounds which highlight our desperate need to understand the nature of this plant and it's compounds more scrupulously. Now, thanks to an absolutely groundbreaking new study performed and published by the cancer lab and other dedicated teams at the University of Chicago, we can clearly see a connection with CBD's ability to reduce or even reverse the transmission of COVID-19 virus between cells in-vitro, as well as profoundly reducing the infection rate between humans.
"These results complement previous findings suggesting that CBD suppresses cytokine production in recruited immune cells such as macrophages (22). Thus, CBD has to the potential not only to act as an antiviral agent at early stages of infection but also to protect the host against an overactive immune system at later stages. "
An interesting portion of the new research has found that CBD preparations have an incredible effect on the transmissibility of the virus’s known “spike protein” which allows it to latch onto epithelial cells within the lungs and mouth, acting as a gateway for infection. Their in-vitro trials show consistently high doses of CBD initiated cells to terminate the infection before replicating further, lending more to the idea of using CBD as a post-infection therapy or treatment. Here's what they found:
“Principal component analysis of host cell RNA shows almost complete reversal of viral changes but, rather than returning to a normal cell state, the CBD+virus infected cells resemble those treated with CBD alone (Fig. 4C). Similarly, viral inhibition of genes associated with ribosomes and neutrophils (Cluster 3) is largely reversed by CBD, but the drug alone has no effect. This contrasts with Clusters 5 and 6 where CBD alone induces strong activation of genes associated with the host stress response. Together these results suggest that CBD acts to prevent viral protein translation and associated cellular changes.”
In the human transmission part of the study, the University of Chicago team noted a steep reduction in infection rates among 198 patients, half of which were provided regular CBD doses for a length of time leading up to the administration of a covid-19 test. The group that had not received any CBD doses had come back with a 12% infection rate, while the CBD test group had an astonishing 1% infection rate.
This profound finding adds to CBD's gravitas as a wellness mainstay and one of many keys the world can use against spreadable pathogenic viruses in the future. It should be abundantly clear that hemp-derived CBD and your body’s innate immune system both play an incredible role in preserving good health and preventing chronic illness, though we'd like to note that this research is not a replacement for vaccines, and we urge everyone to continue do their own research by reading the full study here.
The time has come for the greater populations to acknowledge how plants and humans interact to create homeostasis inside the body and on the surface of our planet.
